Cinema Discussion: Wolf Man
‘Poor Things’ Christopher Abbott stars in Blumhouse’s newest Werewolf Horror ‘Wolf Man’, will expect to sweep in a Big Million Dollar Domestic for the Opening Holiday Box Office Weekend.
Motel Movies and Blumhouse Productions' newest R-rated werewolf horror ‘Wolf Man’ arrives Friday this week in January 2025. ‘Wolf Man’ stars Julia Garner, Matilda Firth, and Christopher Abbott at a remote farmhouse, where an unseen animal attacks, but as the night progresses, Abbott transforms into something unrecognizable.
Before Garner, Abbott, and Firth signed on, according to IMDb, in 2021, with a third collaboration between actor Ryan Gosling set to star, and Derek Cianfrance set to direct ‘Wolf Man’. Gosling and Cianfrance left the film, with Leigh Whannell in the director’s chair and writer, alongside Corbett Tuck, who will sit as co-screenwriter, and Abbot as the main star in replacing Gosling. Whannell, Gosling, who will receive executive producer credit in addition to Jason Blum, Ken Kao, Beatriz Sequeira, Melanie Turner, Axel Paton, and Jon Romano will serve as producers. Gosling has two more films in post-production at the moment. Whereas Goslings will sit not as the lead or star but as a producer of both films, ‘Project Hail Mary’ released in 2026, and there is no initial release date for ‘The Actor’.
There is doubt whether ‘Wolf Man’ will have a solid opening weekend at the Box Office for Abbot, who is fresh off from ‘Poor Things’ and starring in ‘Kraven The Hunter.’ Previously, SlashFilm and Box Office Theory reported that ‘Wolf Man’ is currently looking at $20 to 30 million for an opening Box Office weekend, particularly for a film made with only a $7 million production budget. However, Leigh Whannell is not a director name that sounds like it would wrangle a large audience unless you’re a fan of Whannell’s SAW (2004) movie or the Insidious films.
Could Blumhouse Productions and the Motel Movies’ ‘Wolf Man’ redefine the werewolf horror genre for the teen market? Is ‘Wolf Man’ just another Box Office miss that would be left forgotten? Should ‘Wolf Man’ be better off streaming instead of a theatrical release?
Recently, Fandango Director of Analytics and founder of
said, ‘Wolf Man’ is tracking for a domestic debut in the mid-teens demographic and a possible $20 million over the four-day holiday next weekend. "Horror has been a staple at the box office for quite some time thanks to its budget-friendliness and diverse audience appeal, and at the center of that consistent success has been the Blumhouse brand. With a holiday weekend on deck, Wolf Man could stand out among genre die-hard fans," Robbins said. ‘Wolf Man’ will heavily depend largely on word of mouth. ‘Wolf Man’ target for now looks like anywhere around $40-65 million domestically.
